History in the remaking Los Angeles Times

bethlehem house

In 1899, the owners of the iron company founded Bethlehem Steel Company and, five years later, Bethlehem Steel Corporation was created to be the steelmaking company's corporate parent. Originally a producer of iron rails for railroads, the sprawling plant along the Lehigh River began making steel in 1873 and, by the 1880s, was producing weapons and armor for the U.S. At its height during World War II, Bethlehem Steel was the nation’s top military contractor and the plant, which comprised 20% of the city’s land mass, employed more than 31,000 workers. While it's a far-flung possibility, which party has a majority in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation also could have major implications on the presidential race.

Support and strengthen family & community.

If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner. Currently, Democrats have a 9-8 advantage — meaning one general election race in November could make all the difference. Its shipbuilding operations employed as many as 180,000 persons, the lion's share of the company's total employment of 300,000.

Our Services

Navy would soon solicit bids for the production of heavy guns and other products such as armor that would be needed to further expand the fleet. Jaques contacted the Bethlehem Iron Company with a proposal to serve as an intermediary between it and the Whitworth Company, so Bethlehem Iron could erect a heavy-forging plant to produce ordnance. Our mission includes helping individuals and families before they're homeless, we're proud to provide daily meals and food boxes for anyone and everyone in our community. In 1982, Bethlehem Steel reported a loss of US$1.5 billion and shut down much of its operations. The company's profitability returned briefly in 1988, but restructuring and shutdowns continued through the 1990s.[13] In the mid-1980s, demand for the plant's structural products began to diminish and new competition entered the marketplace. Lighter construction styles, due in part to lower-height construction styles, such as low-rise buildings, did not require the heavy structural grades produced at the Bethlehem plant. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was an American steelmaking company headquartered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Until its closure in 2003, it was one of the world's largest steel-producing and shipbuilding companies. From its founding in 1857 through its 2003 dissolution, Bethlehem Steel's headquarters were based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley region of the United States.

The Hagley Digital Archives provides online access to selected items from the Hagley Library's collection of images, documents, and publications related to the history of business, technology, and society. By the 1970s, imported foreign steel was proving cheaper than domestically produced steel,[22] and Bethlehem Steel faced growing competition from mini-mills and smaller-scale operations that could sell steel at lower prices. The Bethlehem House enjoys guidance from a board of directors who deeply believe in our mission to provide care and resources to pregnant and parenting women in crisis.

Pennsylvania Democrats clash on Israel-Hamas war

As attorney general, both would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide. At the state level, Democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority in the state House and take control of the state Senate. Republicans currently hold a majority in the Senate, and Democrats are hoping to flip at least three seats to make it 25-25, giving them the majority via a tie-breaking vote from Democratic Lieutenant Gov. Austin Davis. The collections and research newsletter brings you the latest on our acquisitions, library events, and programs. U.S. global leadership in steel manufacturing lasted about two decades during which the U.S. steel industry operated with little foreign competition. Eventually however, foreign firms were rebuilt with modern techniques such as continuous casting, while profitable U.S. companies resisted modernization. Bethlehem experimented with continuous casting but never fully adopted the practice.

The wooden turrets and shaded portraits feel frozen in time, calling back to a post-Spanish, pre-Hollywood way of life that feels like a secret part of L.A. This gorgeous outdoor amphitheatre has been hosting concerts since the LA Philharmonic first played here in 1922. Nestled in an aesthetically blessed fold in the Hollywood Hills, the 18,000-seat venue can bring out the romantic in the terminally cynical. The Bowl started as a natural amphiteatre called Daisy Dell with a simple stage and wooden benches. Lloyd Wright designed two shells in 1927 and 1928 that only lasted a year each, but aspects of his design were incorporated into later revisions. In 1929, Allied Architects put in the Bowl’s original shell, which was in place until 2003, when it was replaced by a larger shell with better acoustics.

We spend most of our indoor time in our bedrooms, so we should try to make it as much serene and cozy as possible. Carpets my not have had the best rep in the world of interiors, but with so many recent trends focusing on comfort and coziness, carpets are making a slow but steady comeback. And where is it more appropriate to embrace this new trend than in the bedroom? Wooden floors may look lovely and all, but there's just something so nice about sinking your feet into a carpet when you get out of bed. If you live in a rental or don’t feel like hanging up prints, lining your art up on a shelf can create the same effect with minimal effort. Just make sure that the prints are in different sizes for a more interesting end result.

Dim lighting creates a seductive environment, so you might want to keep that in mind when shopping for lighting fixtures. This bedroom is all about clean lines and neutral tones, but the creative use of lighting makes it stand out nonetheless. If you’re looking for classy, nothing beats an elegant leather loveseat. Paired with a gorgeous bed frame and a luxurious rug and you’ve got yourself a dapper bedroom.

Reading books is the best habit you can develop to give your eyes some much-needed rest from continuous blue light exposure. A 2009 study conducted by researchers at the University of Sussex concluded that reading books right before sleeping can bring down stress by 68%. If you have free space on the corners of your room, you can put a sculpture, a vase, or any other decorative piece in each one of them. Having a good old-fashioned alarm clock on your nightstand can help you avoid such nightmarish situations. An alarm clock in your bedroom gives out a sense of responsibility.

The more unique the source the better when selecting timbers for projects like this. Old repurposed barn wood, fireplace mantles, and rough cuts from a local sawmill all make excellent choices for large slabs of rustic wood. We’d suggest spending some time to make sure the timbers under your mattress are as flat as possible. If you’re lucky enough to have a print of your favorite historical figure, go ahead and hang it in your room. More importantly, find a way to make all your books look organized while still being interesting and easily accessible.

Make sure the wood is a different color than the walls and floors, so they stand out. Hang a string of Edison Bulbs along the wall to give the bedroom a calm, rustic feel. It is no secret that usually (due to extensive market research) women are the primary targets of manufacturers and creative designers because they are the big buyers.

One of the best ways you can make your room feel bigger, is by adding mirrors. Mirrors create an illusion that your room is bigger than it is. Making your small bedroom look bigger is about being efficient with your space. Over the years, I’ve found ways to make me room look and feel bigger.

All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers. International Steel Group, in turn, was acquired by Mittal Steel in 2005, which then merged with Arcelor to become ArcelorMittal in 2006. The company's steel was used in the construction of many of America's largest and most famed structures. Among major buildings, Bethlehem produced steel for 28 Liberty Street, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, and the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City and Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

The company’s economic might was symbolized by the 1,500-foot-long No. 2 Machine Shop, once the world’s largest, and by the 20-story blast furnaces that have dominated Bethlehem’s skyline for 100 years. Sands has consistently expressed support for the goal of telling the Steel’s story. The company has already dedicated the oldest building on the site, the circa-1860s Stock House, to the city for use as a visitors center.

Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate. If Pennsylvania Democrats hold their narrow majority in the state House and win the state Senate in November, it would give Gov. While the area leans Republican, Democrats say they can win over independents and moderate conservatives in the area with a message centered around protecting democracy. Board of Directors

In 1991, Bethlehem Steel Corporation discontinued coal mining it had been conducting under the name BethEnergy and the company exited the railroad car business two years later, in 1993. In 1992, the Johnstown plants of the Bethlehem Steel, which had been founded in 1852 by The Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown and were purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1923, were forced into closure. Bethlehem Steel Corporation installed the Gray rolling mill and produced the first wide-flange structural shapes to be made in the United States. These shapes were partly responsible for ushering in the age of the skyscraper and establishing Bethlehem Steel as the leading supplier of steel to the construction industry.

Then legalized gambling came to Pennsylvania, with the state awarding Sands a coveted slots license on the strength of its ambitious plan for Bethlehem Steel and its promise to honor the company’s history. By the close of the 20th century, however, bloated labor costs and foreign competition had helped spell the demise of Bethlehem Steel and many other domestic producers. Steelmaking in Bethlehem ended Nov. 18, 1995, and the plant became the nation’s largest brownfield. Ideas for redevelopment came and went, and many of the historic structures were in danger of being torn down.

Each resident has a Case Manager and receives an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) based on their circumstances. Bethlehem Steel Corporation became the second largest steel provider in the United States. Both the Bethlehem Steel Company and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation existed simultaneously after 1904 until the 1960s, when the two companies were merged into the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The two second-class battleships, the USS Texas and the USS Maine, both had large-caliber guns with 12-inch and 10-inch, respectively, and heavy armor plating. The company continued to prosper during the early 1880s, but its share of the rail market began to decline in the face of competition from growing Pittsburgh and Scranton-based firms, such as the Carnegie Steel Company and Lackawanna Steel.

The steel industry in the U.S. prospered during and after World War II, while the steel industries in Germany and Japan lay devastated by allied bombardments. Bethlehem Steel's success reached its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s as the company began manufacturing 23 million tons of steel annually. In 1958, the company's president, Arthur B. Homer, was the highest-paid U.S. business executive, and the firm built the first phase of what would become its largest plant, Burns Harbor between 1962 and 1964 in Burns Harbor, Indiana. Bethlehem Steel survived the earliest declines in the American steel industry beginning in the 1970s. In 1982, however, the company suspended most of its steelmaking operations after posting a loss of $1.5 billion, attributable to increased foreign competition, rising labor and pensions costs, and other factors. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and final dissolution in 2003 when its remaining assets were sold to International Steel Group.

From 1923 to 1991, Bethlehem Steel was one of the world's leading producers of railroad freight cars following their purchase of Midvale Steel, whose railcar division was located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Bethlehem Steel Freight Car Division pioneered the use of aluminum in freight car construction. The Johnstown plant was purchased from Bethlehem Steel through a management buyout in 1991, creating Johnstown America Industries.

The navigation menu is flawless and optimized for getting visitors to high-intent pages. Below the hero section, they’ve showcased use-cases, features, social proof, and more with great images, seamless animations, and clear copy. Besides focusing on the goal, it also follows the modern website design aesthetics elements. For example, it uses a great font, a suitable color palette, high-quality product photos, a hover-to-reveal-further navigation bar, and more. The colorful image of a well-designed sitting room right at the top immediately captures visitors’ attention.

The world of modern website design is ever-changing, and staying ahead of the curve is vital for businesses and web designers alike. With rapid advancements in technology and growing competition, it’s crucial to stay updated on the latest design trends and best practices to stand out in the digital landscape. The site of the American cosmetics brand is an example of excellent eCommerce design, created in a sophisticated black and white style. She uses the white-blue-yellow color palette, call-to-action buttons, special word combinations (“badass baby”) which together line up a holistic image.

And they use white space to find the most important information on pages, so knowing how to use white space on your website will help improve your site’s user experience (UX). One version of paralax scrolling allows you to expose more of the site each time you scroll — like the site is telling a story. Instylr is a free modern and high quality fashion brand website template that uses cool fullpage hero image carousel on its landing page to capture visitors' interests quickly.

AD Classics: Stahl House Pierre Koenig

stahl house

Micah Killough, 41, of Mesa, said he and his family wanted to encourage GOP lawmakers to stand true to their views on abortion and not cave to pressure to repeal the ban after the state Supreme Court ruling last week. The program was created in 1945 by John Entenza, editor of the groundbreaking magazine Arts & Architecture. Its mission was to shape and form postwar living through replicable building techniques that used modern industrial materials. With its glass-and-steel construction, the Stahl House remains one of the most famous examples of the program’s principles and aesthetics. Bruce said his father didn’t understand the meaning of the word no; it just meant to try another way. Buck was told how hard it would be to get the lot ready to build on and he spent years dry-laying donated concrete.

The walls made completely of glass allow this to be possible and also diminish the distinction between the indoors and outdoors, making the transition much more fluid and bringing nature into the home. It was finished in 1960 in the height of mid-century modernism and is a pinnacle of the style preserved for posterity. In 1999, the house was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, and is open to the public to visit and pretend they live in this truly one of a kind architectural feat. Koenig's design was built in 1959 as part of the Case Study Houses program.

The cantilevering aspect of the structure with steel supports was essential to the realization of the end result. Instead, he designed the structure while keeping typical connection parts in mind. This was done to lessen the cost of the overall project, as well as alleviate the time constraints.

Welcome to The Modern Postcard

One by one, he arranged the chunks into retaining walls, filling the cracks and smaller gaps with decomposed granite shoveled from the hillside. By building a perimeter around nearly the entire lot, he enlarged the lot’s buildable surface by around six feet. He shaped one corner of the sloping lot into six terraces, reducing hillside erosion. “We’d drive up to sit and dream.” But building a house there seemed as far out of reach as Catalina Island. The lot sat empty for four long years, as Buck and Carlotta paid it off with monthly installments of two hundred dollars plus interest, each payment handwritten in ballpoint pen in a pocket-sized ledger.

It never got a committee hearing, but it could be brought up for a final vote if there is enough support. The bill is a "clean repeal" of the 160-year-old law, meaning it simply removes the abortion measure from the law books without adding anything new. But Republicans in the Arizona Senate crossed over to vote with Democrats, kick-starting the legislative process required to pass an abortion ban repeal. If the proposed repeal wins final approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature and is signed into law by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, a 2022 statute banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy would become the prevailing abortion law. Even so, there would likely be a period where all abortion is outlawed, because the repeal won’t take effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, likely in mid-summer. Arizona Republicans have been under intense pressure from some conservatives in their base, who firmly support the abortion ban, even as it’s become a liability with swing voters who will decide crucial races including the presidency, the U.S.

The Stahl house is still owned by the Stahl family, and they have turned down multiple offers to purchase the house, the highest being that of 15 million dollars. Today, the Stahl house is still owned by the Stahl family, even though they have received multiple offers throughout the years. The family does, however, offer private tours of their home throughout the year. The large feature pool, which the Stahl children speak of so fondly today, was never part of the original plans of the house. Aside from being a practicing architect, he also taught Architecture at the University of Southern California, where he taught passionately his entire life until he passed in 2004.

Mixed in with the architectural masterpiece and spectacular setting of Case Study House Number 22 are a family’s memories…an intangible that can’t be valued at any price. Among the book’s many engaging images are stunning professional photos, family snapshots, artwork featuring the house (by David Hockney and others), and original letters, contracts, and receipts, for what now seem quaint sums. Cross’s research for the book was clearly profound and extensive—delving into family snapshots and archives, consulting with lead architects and engineers, and logging 125-plus interview hours. Then she deftly wove together the myriad threads, including unexpected, relevant background details for each key player. Buck could not afford to lease grading equipment or heavy machinery, so he squared off edges and leveled the lot “by hand—the hard way.” He used what he had—two arms and a forty-two-year-old back made strong by sports and the navy. Sweating under the California sun, shirtless and tanned, he lifted concrete chunks that weighed between twenty and fifty pounds.

Senate kick-starts Arizona abortion ban repeal after House Republicans block similar bill

The program was set in place by John Entenza and sponsored by the Arts & Architecture magazine. The aim of the program was to introduce modernist principles into residential architecture, not only to advance the aesthetic, but to introduce new ways of life both in a stylistic sense and one that represented the lifestyles of the modern age. Lawmakers in the Arizona house have voted to repeal a controversial 1864 law banning nearly all abortions, amid mounting pressure on the state’s Republicans. Dozens of people gathered outside the state Capitol before the House and Senate were scheduled to meet, then filled seats in the public gallery as lawmakers voted, many of them carrying signs or wearing shirts showing their opposition to abortion rights.

Programs

But Republicans in the statehouse repeatedly blocked efforts by Democratic lawmakers to repeal the law. If the law is repealed, Arizona’s previous law that banned abortions after 15 weeks would be reinstated. Republican lawmakers are discussing strategies to compete with the Arizona for Abortion Access initiative, which would enshrine the right to an abortion in the Arizona Constitution. The initiative already has far more than the minimum number of voter signatures to qualify for the Nov. 5 ballot. Hours later, after the vote, supporters of abortion rights and leaders of a November ballot measure gathered outside the House.

The Stahl House (also called Case Study House #22) was built by architect Pierre Koenig in 1960, it was originally part of the esteemed Case Study House program and it’s considered one of the more historic buildings in Los Angeles’ 20th Century modernist architecture. The Stahl Family commissioned design and construction of the house back in the 50’s and continues to own and operate it. One of the original owners (Carlotta Stahl) lived in the house until just recently, vacating it on occasion when the home was rented out for special events and movies and TV filming.

Their political ambitions imperiled by widespread opposition to a near-total abortion ban, Trump and U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake had urged Arizona lawmakers to ease the restrictions. But until Wednesday, most state House Republicans repeatedly used procedural votes to block repeal, each time drawing condemnation from Democratic President Joe Biden, who has made his support for abortion rights central to his reelection campaign.

“We had already claimed it, even though we’d never been there.” They climbed into Buck’s convertible, wove through the maze of narrow hillside roads, and pulled up to the nose of the ridgeline they had gazed upon for months. They stepped out of the car and took their first sweeping, unobstructed view of Los Angeles, rolling out toward a seam of blue sea on the edge of the horizon. Looking every bit like a Hollywood couple themselves, Buck and Carlotta courted on La Cienega Boulevard’s Restaurant Row, where Carlotta turned heads in sequined gowns and cocktail dresses, many of which Buck had custom-made for her. They loved dancing to big-band music and often dined at The Flight Deck, a restaurant with a view of jet planes soaring off the runways at LAX. Carlotta’s parents initially frowned upon the seventeen-year age difference—Buck was forty-one years old, Carlotta twenty-four—but warmed up when they saw how much they loved each other. “When I built in steel, what you saw was what you got,” the plain-spoken Koenig once said.

He also lectured at other prestigious institutions and shared his time generously. He once hosted members of the Conservancy’s Modern Committee at his home to discuss how to nominate Modern buildings for local landmark designation. I was happy to learn that the Stahl family still owns the house and lives there part-time. We were told that they continue to refuse incredibly lucrative and tempting offers to purchase the property.

This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. Commissioned by Buck Stahl in 1957 and built in 1960, Case Study House #22 became Koenig’s project when other architects turned the commission down due to the problematic hillside site. Considered by many as the embodiment of postwar Modern architecture, the house was immortalized by legendary photographer Julius Shulman. Pierre Koenig designed one of the most iconic and photographed houses in the world, the Stahl House (Case Study House #22) in the Hollywood Hills. Yet he and his work went far beyond that single house, helping to define Modern architecture as we know it. The Case Study House Program produced some of the most iconic architectural projects of the 20th Century, but none more iconic than or as famous as the Stahl House, also known as Case Study House #22 by Pierre Koenig.

The soaring effect was achieved using dramatic roof overhangs and the largest pieces of commercially available glass at the time. The view from their apartment consistently drew their eyes to a lot on a ridge that jutted out over the hills. One day they decided to drive up and take a look at the lot and by pure coincidence the owner was there.

AZ abortion ban: GOP lawmakers block Dems' effort to overturn 1864 law

stahl house

The house, also known as Case Study House #22, was designed by architect Pierre Koenig in 1959. She received her B-tech degree in interior design from the University of Johannesburg in 2018 and has worked at various interior design firms since and had a few of her own freelance interior design clients under her company name binnekant. The Stahl house measures 2,200 square feet and consists of two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The site on which the house was built is approximately 12,000 square feet. The material that made this seemingly impossible build possible was steel.

Koenig not only succeeded but exceeded expectations when the structure was erected in one day with only five workers on site. Various architects were commissioned to create cost-effective and hyper-functional homes for the United States Housing boom, which was a result of the conclusion of World War II, when large numbers of soldiers returned home. The Stahl house was the 22nd out of the 27 homes that were part of the study.

Stahl Hamilton acknowledged that while the failure to nullify the law might be politically advantageous, she lamented that it does nothing to protect pregnant women and health care providers. The measure, which will be called Senate Bill 1734, received its "first read" on Wednesday. That means the bill is active but still needs to work its way through the legislative process. The state constitution requires new bills be heard by each legislative chamber on three separate days, unless lawmakers approve it with a two-thirds majority.

Pro-abortion rights, anti-abortion supporters rally outside Capitol

stahl house

At first glance, the house looks like it is a floating glass box, held together only by the visible steel connections. However, underneath the glamorous house are grade beams and large concrete stacks that form the foundation against the steep hill where the house was built. An impossibly steep building site that many architects turned down, but it only took one architect, the right one, to take this crazy and seemingly impossible idea and make it not only work, but make it one of the most popular residential buildings ever to be built. Visiting the house today and not knowing anything about its history, it would be impossible to believe that it was not built much more recently than in the 1950s. The Stahl house interior was originally a museum of mid-century modern furniture with warm wood finishes and orange and red linens. Today, however, there have been some interventions by contemporary designers.

Arizona house votes to repeal state’s near-total ban on abortion

After Roe v Wade was overturned in June 2022, the then Arizona attorney general, Mark Brnovich, a Republican, persuaded a state judge that the 1864 ban could be enforced. The law had not actually been enforced while the case made its way through the courts. The civil-war era law had been blocked since the US supreme court’s 1973 Roe v Wade decision guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion nationwide.

After some negotiations, the Stahls ended up walking away that day as owners of the lot through a handshake and a deposit of $100. John Entenza assumed the Case Study House No. 22, the best known house of program, was rebuilt in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles as part of the exhibition ‘Projects for Modern life, History and Legacy of the Case Study House Program” in 1989. The singing beams and the width of sheet metal siding that characterized the minimal structure of the Seidel House are incorporated again to the house that Koenig designed for Carlotta and C. Earlier this year I found myself lifted out of the streets of West Hollywood and into the hills above, to Woods Drive. What may appear to be a regular house in the Hollywood Hills as you drive up the winding, dead-end road, is much more spectacular than that. And unlike its neighbors, the house—now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument—was originally built as an inexpensive, efficient model home.

Arizona House Votes to Repeal 1864 Abortion Law

The 1864 law was revived last week in a state Supreme Court decision that made headlines nationwide. The following day, attempts to push an immediate repeal were shut down by Republicans, triggering loud protests from Democrats. One of the people in the gallery heckled Gress as he was telling reporters that he was still confident a repeal would happen if supporters could get the measure brought up for a vote. After the first attempt failed, Rep. Alma Hernandez, D-Tucson, tried again. She argued that Republicans play with the rules all of the time to deny Democrats the ability to have their bills heard. Rep. Matt Gress of Phoenix was the only Republican who backed the motion from Democratic Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton to bring a repeal up for a vote.

Previously, she has covered a range of topics from Donald Trump's legal battles to Taylor Swift's path to becoming a billionaire. Prior to joining Forbes, Bohannon covered local news and spent time at the Fort Collins Coloradoan and the Arizona Republic. She graduated with a degree in journalism from Creighton University and has an MA in investigative journalism from Arizona State. Forbes reporters follow company ethical guidelines that ensure the highest quality. Follow Bohannon for continued coverage of pop culture, politics and updates on the war in Gaza. Even if the Senate passes the law and it is signed by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, the 1864 law could still go into effect for a period of time because most bills don’t go into effect until 90 days after the legislative session.

But without another Republican, the repeal supporters lacked the 31 votes they needed to surmount objections from House Speaker Ben Toma. The Arizona Supreme Court concluded this month that the state can enforce a long-dormant law that permits abortions only to save the pregnant patient’s life. The ruling suggested doctors could be prosecuted under the law first approved in 1864, which carries a sentence of two to five years in prison for anyone who assists in an abortion. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and several lawmakers said Wednesday they’ll push for legislation temporarily allowing Arizona doctors to perform abortions for their own patients in the neighboring state. The other Republican who supported the repeal measure, state Rep. Justin Wilmeth, didn’t return an email and phone call seeking comment on the vote. Original owners Buck and Carlotta Stahl found a perfect partner in Koenig, who was the only architect to see the precarious site as an advantage rather than an impediment.

The history of Stahl House began in 1954, when the Stahl couple acquired a small plot of land and started to shape the house of their dreams. The couple spent the weekends of the next two years building the wall that surrounds the building, and once the house of their dreams had taken shape in their minds, they hired architect Pierre Koenig to make their dream a reality. That last one was an attempt to deliver a more appealing multi-family residential unit, which they presented in their magazine alongside a brutal takedown of the dingbat apartment model. By the time Case Study Apartments #1 was built in 1964, the dingbat was here to stay, having spread over the city during the development-driven era of the 1950s. This is to give you an uncrowded experience—you can spend one hour on the grounds, taking photos clean of other people in the shots, or serenely sitting by the crystal blue pool like you own the place.

The photos made it to a few publications, which made the Stahl house a popular house. Since the release of the photographs, the house has been featured in many commercials, films, and other visual representations. SAH Archipedia tells the story of the United States through its buildings, landscapes, and cities.

Bolick and Shope then voted with Democrats to introduce the repeal bill. Planned Parenthood officials vowed to continue providing abortions for the short time they are still legal and said they will reinforce networks that help patients travel out of state to places like New Mexico and California to access abortion. After Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, persuaded a state judge that the 1864 ban could be enforced. Still, the law hasn’t actually been enforced while the case was making its way through the courts. Brnovich’s Democratic successor, Attorney General Kris Mayes, urged the state’s high court against reviving the law.
