Karl, now back in Britain after his "seven wonders" trips, sits down with Ricky and Stephen to discuss the experience. Stephen is confused by Karl's seemingly contradictory statements about not wanting to miss the many sights and sounds on his travels, but also being overly annoyed by them. Many of the situations Karl experienced he classifies as false fun, which he does not like in principle.

During his trip, Karl goes to a cuddle party, prospects for gold, spends time with an Amish family, joins a high school choir and has to choose between going wing-walking or taking part in a Mr. Leather contest. Karl takes a ride on a dog sled, stays with the local Inuit community, eats raw frozen meat and get very sick on a deep sea fishing trawler. In this first episode we see Karl attempt two very different types of bunjee jump, spend some quality time with a tribe that worship Prince Philip, go sand boarding and wear some very exotic underwear.

An Idiot Abroad
In this episode we see Karl go through Cosmonaut training, have a fight with a Mongolian wrestler, visit a Dwarf Village theme park and get buried alive. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send reluctant Karl Pilkington to see Chichen Itza in Mexico. Arriving in the middle of the Easter celebrations, Karl witnesses a crucifixion, is forced to do Mexican wrestling, and learn cowboy skills. Karl is somewhat excited at the prospect of visiting Petra, Jordan but first Ricky and Steve decide to send him on a detour to Israel, a place he's less excited about visiting. Karl is sent to India to see the Taj Mahal but he gets an unexpected surprise when it turns out he's visiting during the Hindu festival of Holi, and he struggles to adapt to the Indian lifestyle.
Karl tells them about what he thinks he's learned from these travels. Say what you will about Pilkington, but An Idiot Abroad makes the most of its charisma-free star. Series directors Krishnendu Majumdar and Luke Campbell also have an eye for setting up shots that wryly emphasize Pilkington's fish-out-of-water status—like when he dines alone at a Pizza Hut in the shadow of the Great Pyramid. In the most sublimely funny moment in the series, Pilkington answers his cell phone while visiting the step pyramid at Chichen Itza at dawn.
It's Suzanne, his longtime girlfriend, calling to find out how the DVD player works. You can take the boy out of Little England, but you can't take the Little England out of the boy. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl to Australia to swim with Dolphins. Once in Oz, Karl discovers that, although he is diving with something, there's not a dolphin in site. Karl Pilkington finally returns home after travelling around the world to see the Seven Wonders of the World. Back in Britain he's quizzed about his travels abroad by his friends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who want to find out if he's actually learned anything from his experiences.

Discussing the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, Pilkington notes that “We find it all a bit morbid, death. We certainly don't like to talk about it… but then we waste days dedicated to like Pancake Tuesday. ” Pilkington might not be an ideal tour guide, but he does have a pithy way of distilling each of the countries he's visited.
But before he can get there, he's forced to visit the largest religious festival in the world, stay in an Ashram with a living Saint, and play with cow poo. Karl and Warwick's journey continues via India. Laughing yoga and parts in a Bollywood movie are trumped when Karl experiences his first holiday highlight.
